Reference services are an essential part of public library services. To assist patrons with requests, BPL has access to Billings city directories, Billings Gazette newspapers on microfilm, and a newspaper database. We are happy to conduct research requests for obituaries, historical information on Billings or Yellowstone County, or historical residential information.
It is important to our staff that each individual who asks for assistance in finding information be treated with respect, that each question be taken seriously, and that these transactions be handled confidentially. Inquiries from patrons are prioritized first to those present in the library, then telephone inquiries, and then email or other electronic communications in order to provide the best customer service.
Telephone inquiries are limited to five (5) minutes to ensure attentiveness to all library patrons. For more advanced research requests, please fill out and submit the research request form, linked below.*

*Staff will dedicate up to one (1) hour to each request; please allow up to five (5) business days for our initial response. Due to the unknown quantity of Library materials pertinent to your request, BPL cannot guarantee results.
